Painted Pillow using FrogTape Chevron Pattern

This post brought to you by FrogTape brand painters tape. All opinions are 100% mine.

So a few months ago Im standing at the paint counter waiting for a new color to be mixed for some project I was working on at the time (honestly, I have no memory of what it was) and looked over to see something very cool I even shared a pic of it on instagram. One of my favorite companies FrogTape (the same company whos painters tape I used for my chalkboard wall) had a new product. I was intrigued at first glance.

The cool new product is their same painters tape technology (first edge treated painters tape) but in fun, pre-cut patterns of chevron, wave, and scallop. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago and FrogTape reached out to me with the opportunity to try out one of their new FrogTapeShape Tape patterns. I gave them a Hell-Ya! I was thrilled to get my hands on it to see if it lived up to how awesome their original straight tape is.

Once I got my creative juices flowing, I decided to get working and created this cute painted pillow

Obviously you see I decided on the chevron pattern for this project, but the scallop and wavy pattern can be really great as well to create interesting patterns on the wall, furniture, or wherever your heart desires.

I thought I could do a lot with the chevron / zig zag pattern for future projects and I think its neat that a diamond pattern can also be created with the same tape.

Slightly different than the straight FrogTape, there is a plastic backing on the sticky side of the tape. Just peel that off and its ready to adhere to any surface.

To create the pillow, I started off by measuring the size of the insert and traced the pillow size on a piece of drop cloth material.

Then by eye, I laid the first strip of tape on the material. FYI: For the design, I wanted the chevron pattern to get smaller and smaller with each stripe, so no real measuring was needed.

As I added stripe after stripe, I made the spacing less and less, until the last one was skinny-minny.

After the tape was in place and before the painting began, I burnished the tape with my nail tip into the material so it stuck really well and would give a nice, crisp edge for the paint.

Then it was time to PAINT!

I wanted black stripes and the only black paint I had on hand was acrylic craft paint, and it worked like a charm. Wall paint would work fine too, similar to how I created the window panels in my office.

Using a dab-dab-dab technique, I painted the material between the tape lines. Dabbing or stippling instead of painting it on like a wall is better so the paint does not seep under the tape.

Upon completing each row while the paint was still wet, I peeled away the tape.

O Ya, those are perfect lines with no seepage!

And there is the completed pattern on the pillow face.

A few steps more to make the pillow

1. Cut your front piece and 2 back pieces

2. Face the finished sides together

3. Sew all the way around the pillow

4. Pull the finished side through and insert the pillow

The stripes came out really good! I was pleasantly surprised. For a quick and very inexpensive-to-create pillow, Im impressed with the result.

I think a little chevron goes a long way and a pillow like this is just the right amount!

Are you a fan of chevron? Or do you think its been overused?

Im still deciding where to put it, but I think it surely goes well in my family room / home office! What do you think?

My Thoughts

I like this new tape a lot! I think the patterns offer DIYers a variety of unique and interesting design options. Whether the pattern placement or the use of varying widths, there is a lot that can be created using the new Shape Tape. Ever wonder who FrogTape works to create that perfect seal? Check this out Shape Tape is treated with patented PaintBlock Technology, a super absorbent polymer that reacts with the water in latex paint and instantly gels to form a micro-barrier that seals the edges of the tape, which helps prevent paint bleed. Pretty neat, right? If youre interested in creating a pillow like me or something completely new and different, Shape Tape is available at participating Lowes and Walmart.
