Mixing Blue + Black

Im not sure how it started, but for some reason in fashion and in home decor the idea of mixing blue with black has always been frowned upon. Its just as foolish as the rule dont wear white before memorial day or after labor day, or the other silly rule not to mix metals. Why? There shouldnt be any rules like this. And if you do think of them as rules, then break them! At the end of the day, its how an overall composition is put together rather than the focus on a specific element.

With navy and other shades of blue being hot, hot, hot right now, when paired with black, the result is a rich, dynamic, and super luxe look. In fashion and in interiors, I think people are now know that the rules should be broken. Similar to black, I see navy as a neutral. It can be paired with any color of the rainbow. It surely makes a statement.

To show you how mixing blue with black is done right, Ive gathered a slew of ideas + inspiration. Lets go

This living room is rich with hues of blue mixed with charcoal + black. The hi-gloss built-ins, with crown moulding that continues around the room, makes such an elegant statement. The light fixture is a great focal point and those dot pillows in a zig zag pattern are the perfect layer.

A velvet navy headboard wow! And guess where it is from?? Youll never guess. Target. Crazy, right?! This space is stunning and the darker hues make an incredible statement against the light walls and accents.

This living room space is so rich (I cant stop thinking that blue + black = rich) with a glossy black fireplace and tall built-ins with diamond-layout shelving to the side what an unexpected and unusual way to display books. I love it. To offset the dark color, the wall is adorned with a fun geometric patterned wallpaper and a softer hue of blue modern chair sits in front.

A space with many deep hues, especially on the walls, needs to have layers of lighter hues. This space works because the intense walls are contrasted with all white furniture and pops of vibrant yellow. The dark walls give an amazing backdrop to all the other elements in the room. The blacks + blues mesh amazingly.

Its not always the walls that have to be loud with color. Accents of blue + black can be just enough for those who enjoy a slightly quieter setting. This is such a fun sitting area with interesting, and most likely meaningful, pieces of art. Just another space that mixes shades of blue with black and charcoal, to achieve a dynamic result.

Incorporating pillows in hues of navy + black is the simplist of ways to combine the two hues. In this bedroom its done so well by layering pillows on the bed.

Its also what I did in my house recently

My Thoughts

Not until recent have I become a fan of black. I always thought it was too harsh in a room. Before accents of black often reminded me of the high-contemporary 80s era where cabinets to toilets were seen in glossy black. Not until I took the leap and painted walls in my home a deep navy, was I more attracted to the deep hue of black. I realized the result is how the elements are put together as one rather than how they are individually. Many homeowners also think, the darker the walls, the smaller the space, but that is not true at all. I feel a space feels warmer and inviting, and at times even larger, with a dark color on the walls or on built-ins. Contrasted with white mouldings and/or lighter accents makes a space pop.

Shades of blue paired with emerald + black creates for a stunning space. In this space, the black lampshades against the graphic wall print create an amazing statement element.

This is a stop-in-your-tracks space! I love navy so this room totally speaks to me. One or two pops of another contrasting color would be nice but as a whole this space is breathlessly put together. The understanding of how to mix pattern + style using one hue is amazing. The most dynamic eye-popping element in the room is, of course, the black coffered ceiling accent. Come on gorgeousness! Inlaid between with another graphic print makes the space a show stopper.

Pillows can be the easiest first step to implementing blue + black in a space! I hope to have inspired you with some great spaces that show how 2 unlikely colors (blue + black) can work together to create an incredibly rich and dynamic space. Gone should be the thoughts that the two should be forbidden in the same room.
